Also, the "working" in 'working title' is an indicator

I am just struggling with my final work and author - #12.

I have something that could support a shelf(t) as the author but cannot find the title. This is not helped by my inability to verify 36d.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi Xris,

36d - Is an anagram (remember to move the extra letter as well as any others instructed from the anagrist) - definition is "Glaswegian storyteller".

I don't really understand the "shelf" reference but the author's initials are GG and the work is 3,9.

I hope that helps:-)

Thanks, brendan. I did the usual and cracked the clue immediately after posting! I was expecting the author's name to come from the 7th, 8th (and possibly 9th words of 26d and the work to be only 10 letters (to maintain the 13 unshaded cells). if your "GG" is correct, I must be hunting in the wrong place and my "shelf support" reference is not relevant.

I'll keep at it.

Hi again Xris,

26d is the 11th author (7th and 8th words).

The final author is from 31d.

brendan, 31 down should imply author #13, it is the #12 work - 26d - that I am missing. Sorry about the confusion.

Sorry Xris, I miscounted - 26d is #12 and 31d #13.

Thanks to a ruptured Achilles tendon I have got well behind with this and other crosswords. Although I can see what is going on I have one answer I am unsure about (11a - Crowd taken aback, reserve The Razor's Edge 6 'Gather'?) and only 24 of the 26 letters in the message (8, 9, 3, 3 , 1) and can't see where the first and fourth letters of the first word come from. Also I have only 12 of the 13 sets of extra words (9 from across clues and 3 from down ones). Some nudges/shoves in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Alwayspuzzled, you're correct with Gather. There's a three letter word for 'reserve', claim (a bit schoolboy slang-like?). That loses its first letter and is reversed (atken aback). The other four ;letters are 'the' and the 'edhe' from 'razor'.

For the other part of the first word, check the 'place of exile' clue.

PS Alwayspuzzled, the last two letters you need for the message are at the end.
