Haven’t got to 42a yet but 7d is the usual “University” inside a word for Get tougher that loses a letter.

“Charges” I read as in “charge your glasses”.

Not a puzzle I do, but 42a looks like A for academic inside (p)un + b + is. The p could conceivably be f for (f)un
