Still a little way to go here in terms of identifying the works, but the last entry in the grid eludes me:- 25ac 'Follow idle gossip when toad spurns Kerouac say' (6). I have ?A?TER. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The clue contains extra words. The toad is ten letters with the last 4 being Kerouac's first name. Def = gossip.

Bigf, take the first name of Kerouac away from a 10 letter word for a toad... you'll be left with a word for 'gossip'.

I’ve got a full grid and know what’s going on with the theme, but I’m struggling with the names. Are they first names, surnames? Any hint would be gratefully accepted. Thank you

I’m still not getting anywhere with the names. I’ve got the bard, but can’t see any of his works in the grid.
I know this is a lovely puzzle, but I just can’t get there. Grrr!

The bard's title is one of his most famous tragedies 4,4 - the titles are all oblongs and can be one or two columns wide.

Remember the preamble says that all the titles are in order.
