Your crosser at 2d needs changing the U to Y and S to L

Many thanks each. I had Louis in an early answer for 2d. It seemed a slightly forced parsing but it worked...nearly. L for left to+ oui(s) french agreement +3= a decapitated monarch.

Hi all,

I'm nearly there (I think) but am completely stumped by 21a. Maybe one of my intersecting answers is wrong. My Crossens have left me with

T?I?L?

Are these correct?

Hi JuniorBee,

21a - The "model" is a single letter and an old type of car + 5 letter "gun" - definition is "toy" as in something trivial to mess about with.

3d - just a quick query as to why pain is in italics. Is it a special crossword feature which I know nothing about or has it a link to French for bread. I am at a loss to understand it!

Sometimes italicized words are used to mislead. I initially took it as French for bread, but it turns out it was just a pain !(English)

Thanks jag, it seems rather pointless to me unless it is a printing error. I just thought that the pain and the sandwich were connected to the French but to no avail. It seems I need to graduate to a stiffer test but a free Observer from Waitrose every Sunday is hard to forgo. Incidentally, the large jumbo crossword in the Christmas edition was a work of art, especially with its 23 letter anagram. A pity that they published the result in the same paper as there would have been plenty of discussion on here over it!
