I did similar with 2d, thought the answer was legal, which sort of works, but messed up 8a until I spotted the mistake

Hi all, and Happy New Year.
CODs: 23A & 16A.
I think I have 5D but can't parse it. (I think the def'n is to baptise once more?)
Also, in 7D, if I remove a 2 letter abbrev for Place (letters 2&3), I'm left with a word which I'd not say is a synonym of jerk??
And yes, 12's drug is related but isn't MDMA (trust me I'm a pharmacist!)
But nevertheless very enjoyable. Thanks, Everyman

Hi Carmelista. Good to find a fellow fan of the Aubrey - Maturin novels. There are actually 20 in the series so you are in for a treat if there are some you have not read. Very impressed by how the nautical terms have registered with you!

I enjoyed the crossword. COD 16a like many others. Temporarily (I hope) stuck on 21a.

I enjoy spoonerisms and find them funny, but have difficulty solving Spooner-related crossword clues.

BTW (apologies for double post): Thanks to Everyman, nice but not particularly difficult. I also appreciated the different terminology of "to start with". FOI 1a, LOI 16. COD 18, whose first 4 letters I found tricky.

Good morning and a HNY to each. Have I gone wrong somewhere? For 8ac, Goodness is a liability ultimately (1,3) I have ?S?U.
For 10ac it's hot it's cold they say (6) I have ?H?S?I. it could be the crossers are wrong but ... Thanks in anticipation. Re the comments over spoonerisms. I love them. Decades ago I went into the local library and caused much hilarity amongst the librarians when I asked if they had a copy of Mist Over Pendle...

Thanks, Earbuds. Not familiar with the programme but see it now.
Bandydandy - your U is wrong. It’s a very simple expression, if a little old fashioned.
And for 10A, your S is wrong. The answer is a homonym of a synonym for cold, definition is that it’s something hot.
