The 'familiar name' also did one for a nine letter name, which I've been looking for. I wonder why that one didn't feature in the puzzle. Too long maybe?

Very possibly. Still a fair amount of thematic material, particularly with the real word requirement. Bizarrely, I worked out what the final two changes had to be before I realised the familiar item, and thus the connection. I usually get these things the wrong way round !

Well, I still can't find the 9 letter name. Is it entered in a different way to the others? And is this person an 'aristocrat?

Yes, nelson (first column).

...'yes' for aristocrat (same entry method - 1 change).

Oh dear, I didn't see him because Mr (European capital) was occupying most of that space. I shall now have to find him somewhere else.
