I think I have seven of the items - which, if right, would mean the last item would require four changes to be made according to the instruction. Is this right?

I have 9 thematic names plus the 'name' referred to in the preamble. I think the 9 can be combined, or not in two instances, to give the required number of items from the extra letters.

No more than 2 changes in a single entry.

...and the 'familiar name' has 2, which makes it tricky.

I have 9 names and I know a person that links them all, in line with the clue revealed by the extra letters. From what I have I can calculate the number of changes I need to make.
Can I find the 'familiar name'? Nope. Not if the final grid only contains real words and names

Hi Drxx. No problem and thanks. It is the short name I'm looking for (the other part of the name would be a big ask!). I think I need to check whether I've made an incorrect entry somewhere...there is one that stands out but only needs one change and leaves a non-word.
