I read 5d “husband becoming cold” to mean cold supplants husband, and thus the answer a synonym for abandon. Didn’t spot that it could potentially work the other way round.
What I can’t precisely parse is 3d. I have the obvious answer for a common flower but I can’t see why it’s one of eight. I can see there are eight of the answer’s homophone in this actual crossword grid, if that’s what it’s alluding to, but then the homophone doesn’t work as it would then be singular (one of 8) not plural.
I’m probably missing something blindingly obvious…
