I read 5d “husband becoming cold” to mean cold supplants husband, and thus the answer a synonym for abandon. Didn’t spot that it could potentially work the other way round.

What I can’t precisely parse is 3d. I have the obvious answer for a common flower but I can’t see why it’s one of eight. I can see there are eight of the answer’s homophone in this actual crossword grid, if that’s what it’s alluding to, but then the homophone doesn’t work as it would then be singular (one of 8) not plural.

I’m probably missing something blindingly obvious…

Hi Richard. I think a relevant sport refers to Eights, though I've not checked.

Can anyone parse 10A for me ?
I get the last 3 letters but not the first

Thanks

Barryc I think the first 4 letters are "travelled fast" eg a car when speeding

I read 10a as four letters travelled fast, three letters hurley-burley, &lit (hence the ‘?’)

Richard. I thought 3D was a bit weak too. The only way I can make the homophone parse is to think of it as: 'She is one of the eight, so she ...'

Did anyone else raise an eyebrow at 9A? I can see the aim is an &lit but the answer is a not a variety of pomelo except in the loose sense that both are varieties of citrus fruit.

David W. I had to check and found that o's are hybrids of pomelo and one other fruit beginning with M so the compiler just about gets away with it

I had a lot less trouble with yesterday's prize, than this.
Went to bed without getting 22d, 25a. I am still no nearer, despite hints for 25a. I have 22 A---L, 25 D-A---E.

Fop check your spelling on 21 across which gives you 22d beginning with R. ( a defiant person)
25a is an anthor (6 letters for a verb meaning "to potter about (loosely) " with initial of the surname of J.K. ******* inside
