I'm slightly irritated by 5d, where there is a little ambiguity about the answer and the letter in question is not confirmed by the crossing clue. I realise that the definition is the first word rather than the last, but still...

I agree, Ian - the clue works perfectly well both ways, with either the first or last word as the definition, so the unchecked second letter is ambiguous. Careless.

Thanks for all for the hints on 17a, it's a very nice clue after the PDM

I also agree with yevrah on the primarily, is Everyman contractually obligated to use that indicator. Wouldn't Led by ... , or Headed by ... , At the start of the clue have been nicer for a change?

Thanks HW7 but I’m not sure that helps. I can find 3 books of that title and none fit with what I have. Also some help with parsing would be good

Look for a quite loose synonym for potter, then insert a letter (not J or K!). The answer is the surname of one of a couple of literary sisters.

Ah thanks Phil. Got it now. That was the only word I could think of but couldn’t work out how it made sense - I’m not familiar with the author.
