I’m still struggling to reconcile the advice and the preamble. Are we to erase everything except the (4,6)? If so, then to my mind carrying out the instruction would seem to be not so much “involving ten cells” as “involving ALL BUT ten cells”! I think perhaps I just have a certain dislike of endgames that require the removal of most of the hard work we’ve done so far. Is this one of those?

Mooncow, you're not alone with these concerns - there's been some discussion earlier on. I'm inclined to go with the obvious solution, with the reservation that "involving ten cells" is misleading for the reason you state.
