Is that upper case I for India or lower case L for Lima? Not sure what you mean...

Just figured what you’re asking. I’d say the sixth definition.

Thank you Ares. A nice canter. Agree the first quote seemed to need more than 10 cells. The preamble is quite unambiguous and now a rubber will be required. Makes for an easy submission should one be so inclined.

Yes, I'm thinking the 6th as well on further thought,.

Hope this is the correct thread!

All finished but I still have a query on 5d so grateful for a gentle hint please. Have the wordplay but can't make sense of the rest of the clue. Thanks

Simond9x

I think it's a reference to a Poe(m) in which a bird quoths, but this is a more old-fashioned version of what he quothed.

smellyharry, I'm still not able to grasp which word in the preamble you are pondering over (#10). If it's the one that's used adverbially, I use the Chambers app where all the definitions of a word are listed with a number and there are only five for the adjective. The next is a noun. Is that your sixth definition?

After last week's numerical slog (still not over...), I was hoping for an easy grid fill and a straightforward endgame, so, thank you very much for obliging, Ares.

I've just found a couple of quotes from another BP – Blaise Pascal – that are indirectly related to our setter's efforts this week: "I have made this longer than usual only because I have not had the time to make it shorter." and "The last thing one knows in constructing a work is what to put first." There's another that echoes my feelings on this latest fad in Listener endgames: "The eternal silence of these infinite spaces terrifies me."

No Times (or Telegraph, FT, or Sun curiously) delivered at all in parts of N Yorkshire today. Does anyone have a link to this week's Listener please? Otherwise I'll make do with IQ (the 'i' did get to us through the wild and woolly weather!)

Muraria, I am not very technically minded, but will try. Put Listener 4671 in the search box here, find the second of the threads and then go to post 48 (or thereabouts)...
