Cheers! I just have one letter unchecked in 4a now, and can't see what 20d is. May have a letter wrong as nothing seems to fit. Are we adding a letter to first word of clue?
Otherwise done. I will move onto encoding and endgame in the morning.

24d - I'm still confused (there's a shock!) My answer is a "flat-topped defensive mound" and I can see how the last 4 are "cut from ?hole" but can't see the how the first v3 letters are got from "?eight falling heavily" - have I got it wrong?

I think 4a is hiding the entry in the first word. 5 letter word for skill or talent.

4a. Grid entry is hidden in clue.
20d is (3,6) Letter added to words 1 & 6. The latter becoming part of an anagram. Def. is an expression in US
