Thanks very much Phil10000. As you say, convoluted and exhausting, but it looks so straightforward when explained as clearly as you’ve done. I live and learn.

Found this very hard. All filled in but no idea why for half of them. Will hang onto this and wait for Fifteen Squared! So glad I wasn’t the only one struggling.

Thanks to all of you who explained some of the parsing.
I know now that I had my answers right.
If I'd looked for a rhyming pair I wouldn't put CND for the campaigners and would have finished much sooner.
Hoping for a more satisfying puzzle next week.

Yeah this was not a good crossword IMO.

I haven't got an answer for 25A. I hope it's not just the last 4 letters of the long form of the name in the clue.

Can't really parse 16 or 19A either.

Agree that 23A was the worst clue. The spoonerism wasn't very good either, I don't think you should split the syllables across words like that.

Hi ParadigmShifter,
16a, you swap the first two letters - “duke earlier.
I have the same for 25a and wondered what I had missed.
19a - I have an answer that fits and no idea.

19 is a substitution clue. S=son goes in for the C abbrev for "about". Fodder is a weak syn for "seeing sights".

Fodder? Although I see it now though, not a great clue either!

Is 25A really as bad as that then?

I guess you can just think of it as a synonym for the name in the clue, as they're both short forms of the same longer name.

Meh. Not liking it. "Made pencil portrait of" is kind of vague as well.

I don't want to pile on (US sports-based slang). Quite a few solvers seem to be less than enthusiastic about this Everyman.
Better to wait for the 225 blog (which is sometimes rather harsh on E.) next weekend. Between the blogger and comment posters, I expect more than enough faults will be found. :-)
