Nope, the 8 letter word came up recently in Paul's devious THANKS puzzle, my brain is still working a bit.

We used to have a cleaner called that 8 letter word when I was young.

That was really enjoyable and I would have finished it sooner if I hadn't made a spelling mistake in 7D. Thanks for all the hints.

I've manged to get 15d. I was trying to make Ascension fit, even though I knew it began ass. I've made a guess at a word for chemical compounds,but I'm not sure of the answer as I've lost the P in trips. And I don't think I should have a D in my volcanic rock. My husband is an amateur geologist and hasn't been able to help.

I don't think the wine helped me. I've got a few more, but am struggling with 20ac and loads of others.

What about a hint for 5d. I've got ???T??? I can see a possible answer,but can't parse it. What about a hint for 19ac

My husband has just suggested my favourite rock/stone for 19d, so I've filled it in D and all and I can parse it. Yippee.

19A: My pun in all it's glory

I thought 19 was pretty weak themed clue (assuming my answer is correct, not even sure about that (!), that was a pun btw).

5D: Think of another precious stone and put a 2 letter word inside that and add a Democrat on the end.

24A you can have a blonde moment with these chemical compounds anyway

Although googling it they're not very precious are they, google says the stone is semi-precious but I'm not convinced.

I think there is another Monty Python reference today. It is a very silly place. They have to push the pram a lot.

For 20a look at the number of the clue. That should help you with some of the other themed clues (including 19a which I agree is weak because it's not specific enough).

By my reckoning the answer to 19A applies to 17 out of the 33 clues ;)
