I agree Picaroon is at the top of his/her game and always seems to produce first-rate puzzles:-)

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. Spotted how the theme worked quite early on - very clever. But...... perhaps I'm being a little thick - I can't for the life of me see 1d or 6d. I've spent as long gnawing at those two as I did on the rest of the puzzle. Despite the earlier hint, I still can't see 6d. So, nudges on both would be most welcome please to put me out of my misery. I never submit my solutions.

6 is this number of twelve....

1d - 3 letter star + "back in tune" - definition is the number of this clue - I think!

6d - Look for a 6 letter US capital and remove the A + U - definition is "6th" of 12 .....

Thanks both. I think 'doh!' and 'doh!' might be appropriate responses. I didn't know that that was the capital, I always thought it was the one beginning A.

Thanks all for the hints, but especially buzzybee @6, which finally helped me understand the theme. There’s no way I’d have finished this without this forum (and the Quick Solve section of this website). Even when I need loads of help, I feel so satisfied when I get it all filled in :-)

Well, I've solved it (with some help from posters on here) but haven't got a clue about the theme. I've written a list of all the words in clues that begin ... and I can't see it. Without giving it away, can you tell me if I should be looking for a link among those words or is it a question of how each of thse clues works - do they have a hidden definition?

I was very much in the same position as you and was trying to find a link between the words - there isn't one.

Instead each clue contains a subtle definition. See my post @18 for the definitions to 1d and 6d. The others are in a similar vein ie no. of clue or no. of dots etc.

Ace! Liked this very much. LOI 1d - and then the penny finally dropped.

However, struggling to parse the last 6 letters of 3d.
