8d - 2 letter "on" inside 2 letter acronym of "eg gents" reversed/'up' - definition is from the number of the clue (another sporting reference)

The hints on this thread helped massively. For some reason, I'm only stuck on 2 down: ...post filled by commander.
I have an answer, but I'm not convinced by it. Any hints?

2d - 4 letter "post" (as a verb) around/filled by 2 letter "commander" - definition is the no. of the clue (in a duel, maybe)

I am feeling very dense. Really struggling with this one, even after working through the posts on the forum. FOI was 10a and I am not doing badly in the NE corner, though still can’t work out 6d. I have filled in nothing in left hand side apart from 4d and 28a. Am going to take a quick break because my brain clearly isn’t working, but can anyone give me a gentle nudge, without giving too much away?

I wouldn't be too disheartened, I think we all struggled with this.

6d - Google a list of US state capitals and look for one that has A + U and remove them/"without a university" - definition is no. of clue of twelve.

One of the early across clues on the LHS is a long hidden.

I think I’ve finished, getting the themed answers from the wordplay but I failed to spot the theme without help from the forum. Thank you all.
I have an answer for 24a, having included the bovid, but cannot parse the rest of the clue.

Hi Rossim, the first two letters are something you might have done at school?

In fact, we made a strong distinction between the first two letters and "games"; the latter was fun, the former wasn't!
