I'm just left with 10a and 3d which cross, a tip for either should help!?

10a - definition is "refractory" - 6 letter "as it would seem" minus "ultimately futile".

3d - Thematic - 7 letter "in a cliched manner" minus the first 3 letters theme word.

Sorry Lumen, completely forgot to give the wordplay part of 3d ..

3 letter "every" + "year"

I can see the 3d entry I think Brendan but my word for every year has 8 letters and so it doesn't work.

I have refractory now, after closer inspection of the meaning...was thinking chemical, doesn't burn etc.

I got it with help from your second post. Bit of a mean clue 3d I think. A word ending in 'ally'...the main bit missing!
Anyway onto the Listener, I'm way behind, had a busy weekend.

I am completely baffled by 20a. I have a full grid apart from the middle unchecked letter. A hint would be very welcome - thanks.

"i" eid is the festival inside hi (greeting) Temple refers to shirley temple i think...

d'oh! Of course, thanks bunty. I was completely unaware of Shirley Temple ever having played the role, hardly surprising given that it must have been an ice age ago.

i worked backwards from the answer then googled temple!
