"Caretaker" is always a synonym for 3D in a sporting, particularly football context.

Re 6, I don’t get the parsing of it. I assume that it’s a law with a k in it but ethical?

I presumed "a little ethical" indicated a letter needed to complete the solution.

Hi Cymro,

6d - First 4 letters are "what you might get when boxed" then a single letter for "a little ethical" then a 4 letter "salad" - definition is a (scientific) "principle".

Thank you both for the explanations. I’ll have to think outside the box next time!

Can anyone help with the parsing of 5D, 12A and/or (especially) 16A? I'm no closer to working out what on earth is going on with any of them after staring at them for an hour.

Hi Phil,

5d - "regular" letters clue - definition is a "poet" (specific one)

12a - single letter "very" then "odd" letters of "zodiac" + 2 letter "Everyman" reversed/"flipping + 3 letter synonym for "irritate"

Of course, having posted, I now see two of them (too much reading backwards needed this week imho!). But I still think 'odd' should be 'even' if 12A is to work properly. And how you arrive at the poet continues to elude me.

5D is "regularly" as in alternate letters, answer is the surname of a poet.
