dsc, look up all meanings of the word basic.

Well, after my 3rd morning of grid staring (approx 2hrs + 2hrs + 10min) I finally saw the solution (pun intended). Lets hope next weeks is more crossword and less grid stare.

As you can see, I can't count. Make that 1 evening and 2 mornings!!

Having had no difficulty in filling grid, I now have 25 possibles for cells to highlight, but can't find a choice which makes third operation give result consistent with first

There’s one operation/interaction/reaction, leading to one result (comprising of two constituents).

35 mins on Friday then 5 mins finishing off the last two (27a and d) this afternoon for me. I like an easy one as much as the next solver but I agree with others that this is going slightly too far.

hotelwhiskey: I'd assumed the third symbol to be a logical operator (but I still have 3 too many, & can't find anything consistent)

34d is not, I think, in CED, which slightly annoys me, when some puzzles clearly indicate when that is the case. Googling the solution and a word or two from the clue reveals the connection.

34a in contrast was a delightful clue which almost makes up for the generally straightforward puzzle.

Phantom - the third symbol - the most rightward - is certainly known to you, and is used in the puzzle in the same context.
