Hi SS, for me the 40 should be 90!!

This puzzle hardly needs a Crossword Forum thread. Absurdly easy, well below Listener standard. I really don't know why it was deemed suitable.

The final step took longer than filling the grid, largely because I was mistaken about the context. I still cannot parse 34d, however.

Aaaargh grid-staring AND maths! Am I looking for a string of 22 contiguously joined cells reading, I guess, L-R and including the symbols?

DSC, the short answer is No - nothing as complicated!

I think we need 'entry level' puzzles from time to time, so let's not be too harsh. Novice Listener fans like me, for example, need something to get their teeth into and develop the skill. Thank you, Opsimath.

Foinaven - I will put a hint for 34d in the other thread, unless someone else has beaten me to it.

simplesimon - where's the justification for A = 5? Or have I mistranslated the others? The message appears to be clear otherwise.
Nothing about protecting the NHS though.

Unlike some who found this puzzle a breeze, I found the endgame tricky and, given the title, somewhat "specialist" When further down the path of revelation, could I ask some kind soul to remember to come back and explain the title to me please? TIA
