All discussions should take place on this thread. Gentle hints to clues may be given. VERY GENTLE hints to the theme may feature too - if asked for! Anything stronger than this should go on the other thread, the ANSWERS one.

I know we expect a rather easier puzzle every now and then, but less than twenty minutes including spotting the end game is taking it too far.

I agree, Throck. I'm not in the habit of complaining when a puzzle's easy - I'm grateful when I don't have to put in hours of struggle to finish - but some tougher clues here would definitely have given this one more substance.

I spent far too long on my last entry (14) which isn't in C. The Editors usually draw attention to such things, particularly as it's in Collins and ODE.

Grid fill was far too easy, now back to my least favourite pastime pf grid staring - I anticipate that this will not take too long!!

Thank you Opsimath. Nice and quick. Usually enjoy your mathematical puzzles. The title was a nice play on words.
Gave it up at O Level in 1962!

I'm glad I finished this before reading your post, simplesimon - I think it might have put me off.
I agree with the previous comments - the grid-fill was too quick for me too.

Put you off. Autocorrect 🤬. Was it the reference to mathematical puzzles?

Yes, simplesimon - the mere mention of maths is enough for me to bin a puzzle.
