drxx, thanks, my mistake due to my over-written, illegible notebook grid! I read the "sa....." in row 3 columns 12 and 13 as "as....", so, I agree, no problem with symmetry then

Hi, I have been doing the Listener for over 30 years and I have never been so completely flumoxed by the theme and endgame, this beats "The Hare". If I had some hair, I would pull it out! I have told myself if I ever thought that senile meant something you do on a Saga holiday I would pack it in. Is this the time to hang up my BRB. Perhaps this weeks offering will restore my sanity.

Nearly finished this one, thanks in part to those who have already contributed to this thread. As I see it, we are supposed to highlight a total of 66 cells, i.e. 42 within the rectangle, plus 24 outside it, making up two names and three nick-names. Is that right?

Hi 0pt0, there's a further stage. You highlight the 42 cells within the rectangle having substituted synonyms of the nicknames using the "clashing" letters from across clues and filling in any blanks. Then there are 2 final additions mentioned in the preamble.

Having re-read the preamble, I now think we may only be required to highlight the 42 cells within the rectangle. Confused! Any hints welcomed.

Thanks Ginge. I have the two final additions. It seemed such a pity to me to have to erase the 24 cells outside the rectangle which make up the names/nick-names. It must have been a difficult task for Enigmatist to get them to fit in the grid in the first place.
