One of his paintings reminds me of an album cover I think but I can't remember which one, first I thought it was Fleetwood Mac's Tango in the Night but it isn't.

17d The definition is wardrobe.
I didn't know the wavy pattern but found the French word on google.

Yeah I used a solver for it when I had all the other letters.

I have heard of the French word because I am a computer games programmer and it happens if you don't use mipmaps in your texture maps.

For record album covers relating to 7, try:
Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington (Riverside)
Bartok Piano Concertos #2, 3, Gyorgy Sandor (old Vox LP)
I think the latter painting has frequently been used.

Yeah the first one looks similar. I'm sure the one I was thinking of has a tiger looking through the ferns though. Could be a book cover instead I guess.

Jono @16, the definition in Chambers should have been more clear. The word in question is essentially synonymous with level. Some say degree. For example, I am a first degree black belt (or first ___ ) in taekwondo. While I am not as familiar with judo, I believe the same idea applies. You wouldn't use the word alone to refer to the person, just like you wouldn't call that person a degree or level; it would always have to have the preceding ordinal number.

I still can't find anything in the Chambers app for how 11 relates to soldiers. Can you point me in the right direction?
