Davel, for 24a think of the second syllable of the answer as a letter when spoken

Thanks Jono. Unfortunately, I’m still confused. The second syllable of the answer would give one/first rather than nine/ninth wouldn’t it? Nobody else has mentioned this, and brendan has it as his COD, so I must be missing something, just can’t see it!

24a: I was confused about the extra word ninth too. It is probably unnecessary. The second syllable is pronounced as ‘say’, meaning read aloud.

Do not get the chocolate reference in 1a. Probably obvious but can’t see it

Mathi, the native pronunciation of the second syllable is a letter of the alphabet - I checked with google before posting this! The ninth then makes sense - although it took me ages (and Jono’s help) to understand it.

Mathi, re 26A is it just the pronunciation of the ninth letter of stanzaread?
