ws, the 'ruffled state' is a colloquial word jumbled within the two preceding words. Not everyone would pronounce it exactly as it appears in the final grid entry.

WS, the definition of 12 is "ruffled state" and the jumble starts at the I of fizz.

This American sounds ridiculous when she has to play with a British accent in order to “get” a clue!

I'm missing something obvious as everybody seems to have deduced the theme without any problem while I haven't any idea at all. For instance, I have the seven letter answer to 13 across and two of the five letters of the actual entry but no idea how to go from one to the other. Any hints would be most welcome!!

Jamesa, try reading your answer to 13 A out loud - and see how it could fit into the grid...

I have the two authors and the link and solved the clues but cannot see how the remaining letters from 15d and 22d fit the unchecked squares as in 15d there are two of the same and one different and in 22d two different - any advice on where to place them or how to understand the logic of their placement? Thanks
