In 19 the second split is between "nesting, we hikers" and "judge significant," so the letter would be s or j.

dsc - the ‘meet’ stats at the first letter of the sequence of words containing the answer, not at the beginning of the answer itself.

So DEFINITION abcdeSAN WERfgh would give N and A, not N and S.

I think I have the answer for 21d but can’t see the parsing. Can I have a hint?

Novice, three letters. Often used with ‘reporter’.

I cannot parse the second half of 12 across nor 6 down - can anyone help?
Also on 18 down, I had the first three letters as int (pint) rather than ent (tent) - does anyone agree?

Thanks

Willliamseal, thanks for moving over!

For 18 D, I don't think your idea works as we need two Es.

6 D - the '12' part is dealt with on the first page of the this thread.

WS

From the Plains to the Sandbank this creature confirms it also had pint but think the generic bit may mean it must be a specific wine at the start.

A

Greetings alpaca

I think18 down is a bit arbitrary, but I'm not going to bark. It was a well constructed and thoroughly enjoyable puzzle.

I'm still not clear on the second half of 12 across.: fizz, tranquillising ruffled state.

Anyone prepared to put me out of my misery? It's very wet indeed on the sandbank this evening.

Thanks
