As there is an unchecked X - somewhere in the grid - I was hoping that, as an additional treat, ALL the unchecked letters would be found in the crossword's title and setter, but, alas, it seems not. As it is, I can't see that the title is very relevant, other than as an example of the theme. Or am I missing something?

[ Too late, malone (#21). I already found this hint over there at post #6 - but thanks anyway. I was trying to use a papal court - or an abbreviation for it - added to the answer, but it was quite working. ]

jif73 - if you have solved the final (highlighted) element of the endgame you will see why it is 'ours' !

1. "one of the two letters where the def. and jumble words meet" - in most cases I can see there aren't two letters, usually more in fact.

2. 15.

Any hints please?

2 letters for each individual clue, ie total of eight letters at 1A (four clues)

Sorry, re 15, I forgot to mention I have all the checked letters. If the definition is in the past tense, would one of the unches be D?

Not past tense. If you mean the definition, you are at the wrong end of the clue.

Thanks MPRS the answer is what I thought - you showed me the wordplay!
Ixion, I'll move to the other thread in case I give too much away here...

Yes, I thought it was some of the trickiest wordplay in the puzzle. I had the definition before I could parse it.

Not for the first time I find myself with a full grid (bar 22D) and an impenetrable preamble. What does "two letter where the definition and jumble words meet" mean? In most cases they don't meet but are separated by a variable number of letters. Also, does it apply to both across and down clues?
