I'm afraid chrise's hint at 50 is one of the many here which are too cryptic for me. Is it too early yet to be more explicit about the significance of A and I?

David, the hints only made sense to me in retrospect once I discovered the theme. As soon as you solve one of the clues beginning with A or I the relationship will be obvious and all 9 will fall for you.

20d was my way in to the theme. The answer is hidden.

David, I agree that solving one of the themed clues is the best way in. But maybe it helps to say that in each case, A or I serves as the definition. Remember paradigmshifter asking us to note whether those letters are upper or lower case.

Thanks for the try paulnz, but I have all the themed words. I just can't see the significance of clues beginning A or I.

See my note at 114. If you have all the themed answers, you can see what they have in common. Then think, in what way could A or I (not a or i) be the definition for each of these?

Back on the case this morning

Just three left now. I finally got 8d and Chrise's hint about it being one he should get (being a chemist) helped me realise it. Of course, I had to change my answer to 10ac again.

I've still to get 22ac, 27ac and 23d, but there are many I can't parse. Any further hints for the three will be welcome. I can't face going back through the thread. I remember the hint (sic) for 27ac, but still haven't cracked it. I have AS???T.

How are you doing Paradigm shifter? I can't remember which ones you were after. But 1d is not a common word for study.
