Just realised my error. I had chive instead of the required in 23d. Now done. Thanks for the clue.

I took the last 4 letters to be s for society and then a joint, which is perhaps why Dutch is used instead of German..

Afternoon all. Moderately challenging today, not nearly as entertaining as yesterday's masterpiece.
FOI 1d, LOI 20d, COD 23a which seems to be a popular choice. I was unsure about some of the parsing but I think I have it all now, with thanks to a couple of pointers here

It took me a while to get into this so FOI was 27a which must be something of an unwanted record. Grateful for the pointers on the letter swap questions (20a, 26d). Some of the parsing seemed overly convoluted but I thought it had the same feel as usual. COD 23a.
