Hi Tony,

Letters 4, 5 and 5 are "article" and they go inside/"penned by" a 4 letter "humorous writer" (English Man from the C19)

Many thanks Geeker
I've just finished it after much effort and PDMs after The Young Montalbano. It took me ages to get the thematic "stroke" and 29ac. I was too lazy to go back through the entire thread for 26ac, but finally hit on the answer. My FOI was 16ac, my LOI was 29ac and my CODs were 24ac, 8d and 11ac

Thank you to everyone on the thread for helping me, but no more sporty themes please!

Really enjoyed this, and always good to read the comments.Im struggling to parse 8d. There was a previous comment about the last 5 letters meaning 'smooth', so I presume the first two letters must be 'plug', but I don't understand why.

Secondly, Mr A R Pedant, who pops up occasionally in my mind, wants to add that he thinks that although 22d is a great clue, it is rather harsh and possibly inaccurate. Such a person quite likely doesn't claim to possess thus- indeed, presumably the reason why they went this route is because they are very aware that they don't possess this. Would be interested to know what others think.

Oh, just worked out why the first two letters are 'plug'!

Very late to the party this weekend, exhausted after a garden celebration of my sister's 60th is my excuse
Thanks to many here for all the help in completing a really good, nicely challenging puzzle, and of course lots of thanks also to Crucible. Nice to see new handles as well, welcome.

FOI 10a, LOI 5a, cod 21a but other candidates. Nice to have both the writers of 19a 28a sharing a puzzle, it's a Shane we couldn't see Carroll as well but we can't have too many themes in one crossword!

Prospero (@40) and others' discussion of the US confusion over 10a makes me think of the brilliant film 'Breaking Away' - the father becomes infuriated by his wife preparing Italian food to humour their sons obsession with Italian racing cyclists, and declares 'get me some decent American food - I want French fries!'
NowI'll turn to Everyman - have a good week everybody, take care.
