23 is a double definition: (1) "permit" (noun) or (2) "what posh diners do after meal", (4,4) but might be expressed with "the" inserted between the 2 words.

Thanks Brendan. I don't know how I didn't get 23. I literally travelled to Italy yesterday and was bemoaning getting a stamp for the first time in 28 years.

Lovely day here in Devon, so went out with daughter and friend to a great garden/nursery (High Garden) near Powderham). I came back and did the quick crossword as a warm up, got two answers in the cryptic, so decided to check out the forum. I got several more as a result and will get others. I've finished that NE quarter now. Lots of blanks in SE corner and still not got 26ac and 18d despite threads. What about a hint for 24ac and 25d?

24: defn. "what succeeds uniform", think NATO
25: defn. "stroke" (thematic), 4 (stomach) + 1, it's been discussed early in thread.
