Ah right! Sorry buzzb, got the wrong end of the stick and yes I did have more than one where it could be AABBB or BBBAA etc in both 4 and 5-digit lengths. Few numerics are favourites of mine but this one I found less convincing than most, still it proved an excellent opportunity to practice my XL skills on a wet weekend! ;¬)

Hi solvers, I agree that it involves quite a lot of grunt work, and I’m only part way through it. The first puzzle I submitted was by Zag, and I have to say that since then I have rarely (if ever) submitted an erroneous solution. Yes, I made the mistake of interpreting a clue in one of two ways. It fit the grid perfectly, even with a checksum clue at the end. But it was wrong. Which hurt. When I re-read the preamble I realised my mistake. Just a warning - I don’t think Zag does alternative answers!!

Many thanks for the hint, mathprofrockstar. I originally had 0 there, but couldn't make it work. I'll take another look. Maybe I've gone wrong somewhere else.

I agree with s_pugh - not my favorite. First time I've ever had to resort to a spreadsheet in a numerical. Coincidentally, felipedon, it was for 12a. I couldn't find a four-digit triangular that when a prime was removed resulted in 10 or 15. (Presumably you already have the first digit of 12a as 1.) Granted it was late at night, but somehow I kept missing it. Built my spreadsheet the next morning, and looked at it closely, and there it was. If you need another hint, the prime removed is from the middle.

Essay - no-one is saying that there are alternative entries but there clearly are alternative answers which have the same prime being cut and lead to the same entry

I finally got to the finish line! My mistake was in 9 across – I reversed the wrong other entry.

Thanks Candledave! Understood. Doubtless as I persevere I’ll encounter the issues described!

I’ve had a busy week so haven’t been able to spend much time on this - number ones are never my favourite. I am now on my third attempt and have just realised I have left 47 out of my list of primes (duh)! Can anyone confirm that 47 is G? Many thanks
