Well, that was short and sweet. All done but a few parsing issues. Eg 8d, 31d and, even knowing the correct letter, 13d. I know the definitions in each case.

8d - 3 letter word for singer in an old word for band / gang

31d - two letters for bad smell, then 3 letters for purged and a letter for base at end

13d - a word that can mean apply backwards followed by the adjusted word in the clue

Hi granama. Def for 8d is first word. Three letter word for singer (as in informant) inside old word for band (as in a group). 31d is two letter abbreviation for a bad smell, then three letter word for purged, on the usual base. 13d, three letter word for apply reversed. The third word in the clue is changed and becomes the third and fourth letters of your answer. Definition is last two words

Apologies... I meant 4th and 5th letters. Candledave beat me to it with much more succinct explanations anyway :)

A very pleasant puzzle. Good to have a hint in one of the clues as to the overall theme.

Thank Candledave and Merenz! All sorted, though 13a looks v strange with the correction!
Currently battling with the end game of the Inquisitor. It's a head-scratcher.

I don't know if this passed anyone else by but someone's just pointed out to me that the letters changed thematically in the clues represent the sum total of them - there are no others. A level of cleverness in the setting that I hadn't spotted!

He he, I didn't notice that the "thematic misprint" is always the same until now : )

Greetings all

For the first time I have finished a Listener beforetea time on Saturday and, moreover, without consulting the Forum. Was it an easier puzzle than usual? A haircut on Wednesday and am just going to watch my horse run in the Grand National - it may be my lucky week?

After finding my final misprint I then made sense of them - never heard of it as I have not been a fan of the books, but I loved the films. A quick google then led me to the 10 cells to highlight - grid staring over. Another listener, for me, that took longer to complete the end game than it did to complete the crossword, which I always find both frustrating and somewhat disappointiing.
