This was an easy one, except for 17ac that completely defeats me. A- _i_e_

17a: a term for the front side of a cassette or record with more hit songs. Also, together it means sotto voce.

I was stuck on that too so thanks for the help. Enjoyed this one, not yet there. I have no answers for 22a and 23d, help welcomed. FOI 9a. Liked 14d, very neat, but my COD is 12d, loved the parsing. No LOI yet!

22ac = a type of cheese. Work backwards just putting a pooch around another letter.

23d = another word for a voucher minus one of the regular crossword usages of company. Def = “over”... a bit loose, mind.

I’m struggling today myself though, with 25ac. I can’t see the parsing.

Thanks RichardK. Got them now. Agree 23d is not so good. 25a is Matt and Tony.

And yes, 14d is the finest example of that sort of clue I’ve ever seen!

Morning all. Thanks Everyman, for a nice quick palate-cleanser after Maskarade! Finished in about half an hour in the insomniac slot but chickened out of being the first to post here. FOI 9a, LOI 21a (put off by being to close to the Knight in COD 14d). My only question is in 18a, I assume the first letter is represented by 'based'Inn the core but I don't know why
