39d hidden in the clue gaS PEDal
42a TE note ...a drink with jam and bread....
Canbank, like a bottle bank, so a 'green repository'. Can, somewhere you might go (toilet) and Bank, bench

Thanks granama, you're right. Dental abbreviation for canine I think, and had forgotten the 'Bell' sisters. Was thinking of a London connection.

Thanks Malone and Kirky. I completely missed the alternative spelling of the Aussie bird in 42a. Hmm, that's a funny old containment indicator for 39d but if everyone else got it then it must be OK.
In passing, when I was young the local version of the proverb was always 'Trouble always.........'.

Could someone give me a hint of 14a?
All I can think about is a make of car.
Thanks

Jimmy, that's it - old Communist car/make. The letters are inside, in pairs, a long word in the clue.

Can I just check that the last word of the proverb is also a number?

I don't have the required version of ODQ so am relying on Google.

Hello!

A nice, relatively easy crossword this one, with a couple of things that have put me through hell. I just cannot for the life of me parse 19A and 37A... and I've been staring since Saturday evening... and I'm sure it'll be bleeding obvious once someone gives me a nudge... but it really isn't happening and I'm pulling all my hair out.

Other than that, I haven't figured out the proverb yet, but maybe that'll come to me naturally!

Cheers,
Suzy x

Hi Suzannah,

37a - Is a 7 letter word for "jaw" minus its first letter - definition is "cavity"

19a - 4 letter very rare word (for me at least!) for "strike" minus the F "no loud".

I posted a query about the proverb in the previous post to yours so hopefully we'll know soon.
