Got it from your hint, Quisling, thanks. I have ODQ 5 and it’s not in there, but I’ve found the Wiktionary reference. I suppose it’s obvious once you see it, especially as It’s an expression I use myself often enough!

Just realised I have ODQ 4 not 5. I’m sure that’ll interest nobody, but I don’t want to mislead anyone who’s looking for the quote.

Thoroughly bemused by this one. How do you decide which of the clashing letters is an intruder? How do you arrive at G for 36/29? I have A or I.
Hints for 18a and 39d appreciated. I think I have all crossing letters but struggling to make anything parse.

Lumen, I think canine is a single letter abbreviation and the Acton a person/pseudonym type thing, Acton ****.

Granama1, for 18, you don't go there before the bench. It's split in two - somewhere you go, three letters, then (comes before) a word for the bench...
