Hi mrsh,
If you google the name of the Falklands war defence secretary you’ll have the first four letters, then 3 letters for a cover, no theme word in this one.
Your first A is wrong though

Thank you so much!

42d Two letter abbreviation for volunteers (I think not current any longer), then a 3 letter word for ‘to corrupt. God is a single letter after the theme word. ‘The Pope’ is an example of one of these

Chugging along with this monster, but stuck on the top right corner. Any hints for 7ac, 19ac or 5d would be greatly appreciated.

Freddycat, 7a definition is the first two words: a theme word with any anagram of curate and I for one
5d has caused much scratching our heads, one of a number of obscure definitions in this puzzle. Starts with a theme word, then a two word phrase to call someone around a single letter taken from ancestry

Hi Luko thanks for your help. All done now, the fact that I got the compound words in 16ac the wrong way round (!) at first slowed me down though. Also 11d apparently is a northern England dialect word as well as Scottish.
