I did consider on(eon)e, as Ginge suggests, but didn't see how the whole thing worked, and still don't!

Ah! Thanks Quisling I completely missed the Truro angle. If it was Ely I might have twigged.

Hi quisling, again from memory so apologies if I'm in error but I took the ... , exclamation mark, and "that" in italics in 6d to refer to "one by one" in italics in 5d.

No apology needed, Ginge. What you say makes perfect sense. I still find the clue a bit contrived, but it's an excellent explanation. Many thanks!

Granama1, filling the spaces does lead to real words. Beware at 10 - it's an E (to give the name EWART) not an S giving SWART.

Quite so, Loge, I thought that was a bit cheeky. Does anyone know Victorian Prime Ministers any more?

Hi again quisling, I do like to see creativity from setters and I know that sometimes I feel not all of these efforts are "successful" but this instance (if I'm correct in my parsing) certainly required thought (1 - 0 Nimrod, job done) and was most definitely not a "write-in".

3,5,8 i think you'll have but 10d needs E at the top
ignore the answers to 1a and 8a (both ends of the top row) and ten you have 1,8....

I agree with that, Ginge. I too like to be challenged, and I think his clueing is pretty high-class in general. And of course, one way to avoid the interminable arguments that puzzle introductions seem to produce is to dispense with them . . .

Quisling, Disraeli will always live on in Crosswordland, usually to go topless as a speaker of Hebrew... I did happen to know Gladstone's middle name, probably as it's unusual. I don't know any other famous Ewarts and the name isn't in the Chambers appendix of first names (not in its own right anyway, it may be there somewhere as a variant).
