Kirky, the extra letter in 37a is in the fourth word. Wordplay straightforward, starting with abbreviation for runs, hence to the west

The one clue I can't parse satisfactorily is 6 down. The answer is obvious (and it fills itself in), and I assume the italicised that refers by ellipsis to an anagram of one the the italicised words in the previous clue, but how exactly does it work?

I am also at a loss with parsing 6d apart from the obvious definition and entering itself by crossers.
I have filled in all but 1a and 8a. Any hints here appreciated. I have the first s and last r. Is there an omission in each of these clues?

1 and 8 are both two-letter answers. 1 is a double def (one of them is fifth note of the musical scale) and 8 is a word meaning to display/broadcast minus I to give the phonetic spelling of a letter of the alphabet.

If it weren't for the italics I'd question whether 6 has any wordplay at all!

1a and 8a are both two letter answers, so both have multiple omissions

Oh and there are no letters missing from the clues in 1 and 8.

Any thoughts on 6 down, Quisling?

I had similar issues with 5d and 6d, loge. I assumed the definition for 5d was “we’ll not submit”, and “slapdash” was the anagrind for both clues. Then “rewrites: one” becomes the anagrist. “by one, we would be fired” refers to the removal of “we” from the letters of “rewrites” to give the anagram “triers”, and after the ellipsis 6d is simply the clue for the second part of the anagrist.

But it’s all pretty messy, and the exclamation mark at the end of 6d might suggest John Henderson thought there was something much cleverer than that going on

I have the full string of omissions, apart from those in 34a and 39a that seem to be needed to point to the "advice". The clues do not appear to need adjustment to make them work though.
