@fop 13d solution is "lying", usual single letter for "down" then a 9-letter word for "welcome" with top removed.

I’m not convinced by the single letter abbreviation of ‘down’. It’s not given in Chambers, Collins or the ODE as far as I can see. I’m probably missing the obvious but can anyone explain?

Tx Smot I saw that logic. But like Jono I couldn't convince myself.
Otherwise a good Everyman. Pale ale will help to soothe the embarrassment of missing the Scottish connection

Jono and Mathi, thanks. I was thinking of vain as proud rather than in vain.

Hi all Late again. 10a LOI thanks to Brendan et al for help with that. Managed to work out how that works and also 9a C replacing F which was very clever.

Dermaler. I am with you on the 'primarilies'. Might as well just give us the answer. (Though I must admit that when I struggle to get going, a 'primarily' can be helpful). But...they are hardly cryptic and do not need much head scratching. That's me done for the day. See you all next week.

Sometimes primarilies can be cleverly hidden but not often!
