All done! LOI was 17d - I still can't see what Perth has to do with it.
An enjoyable hour-and-a-bit.

PS If it's any consolation Brendan, your faux-pas had been removed by the time I looked in this thread.... :-)

Hi smot
Maybe like me you were thinking of the wrong Perth?

Hi Smot
Think Perth in Scotland, rather than Australia, and the girl is likely to be a wee one.
Generally enjoyed this a lot, but one quibble -- if my answer to 2D is correct, it's 3000 miles from Hawaii. Not what I'd call 'near'!

I found this a real slog . I struggled with 10A and 14A ( I always find the short clues difficult ) . Still haven't parsed 10a even with help from previous contributors . I'm sure it will come to me later .. a slap head moment ! Cheers everyone .

Like everyone else I found this puzzle took a little longer to solve than normal.
Still puzzled by the clue for 2D; the answer is about 2,500 miles from Hawaii where I once lived.
What am I missing?

Hi catcharmer,
1d requires three initial letters around the name of a queen. The last words of the clue provide the definition

10a is an anagram of one of the words in the clue, with some letters subtracted, and is definition by example

12a another definition by example, a word for winds followed by some ‘ultimate letters’
