Lumen, take the 5th word of the truncated quotation. What does that usually suggest in a crossword clue (especially in conjunction with the next two words)? Then apply it to the 5 normally clued answers to make five examples of the second word of the quote. 7 and 31 are probably the easiest to work out as they are relatively contemporary and well known.

Thanks Loge, I have all that long ago, it's just the 'outcome' etc I don't get yet. I don't know what 'predates' the hidden phrase. Nothing predates it - according to wiki.

I think the "outcomes" simply refer to the results of treating the 5 normally clued answers, Lumen. If you look up the date that the hidden phrase was established (in the 1930s, there's a Wiki entry) , you'll see that only one of the five made his last appearance (1924, I think) before that.
