Is it necessary to know something about the genre to implement the instruction from the single letters? Any hints as to what to highlight would be appreciated (as I know nothing about the genre!).

I assume the last sentence of the preamble might make some sense once the above step is completed.

Again, another one I've lost interest in - I've got a complete grid, I've done the highlighting (by a fluke), and I'm relieved rather than fulfilled. I'm stuck on a couple of the normally-clued entries - I've got 15ac as Jim Broadbrent, and I've got no idea about 27d, unless he's a chocolate'n'nougat-covered peanut. Please help me end another unsatisfying ordeal.

Not really buddy. It is a bit of general knowledge that wasn’t previously known to me.

I cracked the highlighting piece by working up from the bottom half of the grid

candledave, thanks. I got a nudge from a UK-based correspondent that helped with the top rows. Not well known on this side of the Atlantic, certainly!

All done, including the highlighting ... but what happens then is beyond me. It's a bit too delphic for me, and I can only do the necessary on 3 of the 5 words. Maybe my eyes aren't square enough.

Cockie,
I wholeheartedly agree with what you say. I eventually took the preamble to mean that you need to unravel the 5 normally-clued entries and then select one as the precursor to the highlighted connection but it's vague to say the least!

I'm fairly sure I have the quote but I just can't seem to find it anywhere in the ODQ, or any quote by this author for that matter? Is it definitely in the ODQ?
