Nearly gave up on this one! After a promising start, progress got ever slower until I 'got' one of the ten themed answers, after which I found the rest much easier to crack! Didn't see the connection between the theme and the ten 'doctored' entries until I worked out the second (incomplete) quotation and did some Googling.
Still puzzling over wordplay for 1ac. and 27 dn. though. Can anyone help with these? Thanks in anticipation!

1ac. Curse is first 3 letters, 4 letter word for imbued around IVR for Windwards Islands (St Lucia). W the extra letter.
27d. Three letter word for valley, inside Latin word meaning bones, of which atlases are examples. Last letter of the valley the extra letter

For a while, I had 100 as the quantity involved (See 38d). But lovely puzzle.

Thanks for this quisling. I was stumped on 1 ac. as I had convinced myself that St Lucia referred to the Internet domain LC, and so couldn't fathom where the W should come from (as I had the quotation by the time I entered the answer to this clue). Again I was wildly off course on 27 dn - I got the valley bit OK but spent a while trying to find some obscure Latin reference to maps!

Well, while the thread's quiet I'll just throw in my original - but erronneous - parsing of 27d. I thought the first and fourth letters of the entry were the 'map' reference. And that the last two letters of the entry came from the last word of the clue - with Y being the extra letter. Which, as you can imagine, caused a little problem with the second quotation.

Nelson, if it’s any consolation I went down exactly the same blind alleys as you, in 27d and in the extra letter in the final clue

Many thanks quisling.
I eventually got there when I realised what the extra letter had to be. I even knew it had to come from 'valley' but never got round to changing the Y in the few letters I had for the quotation.

Just another little musing. I got 43 fairly easily because I remenbered the "seggar maker's bottom maker". ( Although I think the spelling in the original description was 'sagger'.)

A long, long time ago in a different universe.

A very different universe, if you remember the original appearance of that phrase on “What’s My Line?”! What would they make of that program these days?

Bunty, the first quote is the first line of a film, and the highlighting is the title and the surnames of the two leading actors
