Granama1, I think the first A comes from "before" (ante) and "accepted" is just the inclusion indicator

Unfortunately my 4 seem to be 5! I have 29a, 4d, 9d, 22d and "split" seems to be redundant in 37d but one must be wrong - help!

Not mine either Granama1 but soon googled with the 4,9 start + a few more guessable letters

"Split" is part of the def in 37 Brendan, as I see it. A valley is loosely speaking a split in rock.

It does, Brendan.

I think anyone without ODQ is going to have a heck of a time finding the quote. I have a copy which includes quotes in the original language as well as the English (I believe later versions don't do this). I got there after much frustration by looking at the quotes including the general word for the four items removed from the clues.

Thanks again Loge.

This is so frustrating, I have the quotation and see what the 4 blocks are when treated, but just cannot associate any of it with the 4 unclued entries?

You need to look up the four types of ****s in Spanish. Not the literal translations but the names the Spanish use. Then treat them according to the quotation to give real words in English.
