13a ...one of the acrosses which needs a block removed....

With god's backing, keeping mate under control (6) OPALED seems to work if OPA is removed but that makes no sense following on from DIG above it ??

Your 1 and 13 thoughts are definitely correct - and definitely lead to a quotation...!

36 I took some things out of 'alteration' and ended up with ....

I read 13a as DEO (with god) backing, controlling PAL.

In 7d is "stationary" correct in the clue or should it be stationery?

Orson, I took it that it was a typo in 7D as my answer seemed to work properly.

For 13, I think the 'keeping' results in Pal going inside....

Unfortunately you won't find the opening word in the index in ODQ, you need a word from the translation to track down the quote.

Stationary is listed as an adjectival meaning, which is pretty obscure!
I have some ambiguity about completing the unclued entries despite having the quotation.
