Thanks. I'm away from the crossword just now but I'm sure that will help

Hi, this is only the 2nd time I've attempted the Listener, probably managed about 50% of the grid so far and still no idea about the novel and its characters/activities. I'd like to try to get a bit further before giving up if I could ask for some hints please. Maybe 18a, 27d and anything from the NE corner! Thank you

18a the "o" is removed, sinks is the defn
27d is a normal clue giving an unusual girls name
5d normal clue, defn survive

Thanks Ixion, I've now at least worked out the quote and the novel, so even though I still have a lot of empty spaces in my grid I feel like I have at least accomplished part of it!

Once I got the novel, I just looked up the characters and filled the perimeter. That helped me get the last few remaining entries. Keep going, you'll get there.

Thanks for your confidence in me! I've got 4 of the characters and a lot of the grid filled in now, albeit some unparsed. Still a fairly empty NE corner though, which is stopping me getting the other characters.

7d and 15a are common words. 10a is decidedly not. I've seen 6d before in the Listener.

Thanks, gradually getting some more, though close to giving up now! Are solutions for these ever released?

In about a month, but the people on this forum will help you as much as you need. I started the Listener in the summer, and needed quite a bit of help. (Being American makes some of the clues even that much more obscure for me.) Keep going and keep asking for hints as needed.

I'd stick with it, you've got so far it would be a shame not to finish and, as MPRS says, you can ask for as many hints as you like:-)
