Got both of those thanks. Pretty hard, due to the extra letters.
In 28, I thought removed letter should leave a proper word really and the clue should still have a good surface, this doesn't.

I think you're right, lumen (there's an archaic word - but it doesn't make any sense).

Lumen @12, with the letter removed the remaining word is a common name though. I thought it was ok.

A word for 'finest' + a cut of meat minus the first and last letters.

Ah, thanks mattrom. I had the "T" removed from Trump (which didn't really change the meaning at all) but I didn't think of it as a cut of meat, not being much of a carnivore.
