I've spotted a worrying possibility in the title - could the first word be suffering from the effects of the theme too? If so, I won't get very far with it (I've just spent 20 minutes reading about it on wiki and it's complete gobbledegook to me).

Forget that last idea and persevere with your original idea, tatters/loge (2 words - the 3rd word justifies the treatment).
A bit too sweet for marmite!

If I have the end game correct it is actually very straightforword, not a huge PDM.

I agree ixion - but the possibilities are almost endless and some of us have had to crack the title before seeing what the grid contained - that's the wrong way round for me, the title is usually just a little added extra.

Got it now, after a night's sleep. Thanks for the hint, Drxx.

Well, fair enough I suppose, but a grid fill to endgame time ration of 1:8 is not my idea of a balanced puzzle.

Got there, but not a very satisfactory conclusion I thought. The letter change seems to be a totally unnecessary complication.

I agree with the general sentiment. Not so much “wow” as “oh”.

I've all but filled the grid in this somewhat underwhelming crossword and would just like to put it to bed now (I never submit them). So nudges on the following would be much appreciated please.

4d - I have the first 4 letters and can see a word that would fit (not in Chambers) but can't justify it from the clue.

12d - I have the first 3 letters and think I know the full answer but, again, I can't justify it.

24a - I'm pretty sure that I know the answer. It fits with the first word of the clue but any connection to the second word is tenuous to say the least. Maybe I've got it wrong.

26d - unsolved

37a - unsolved

I know what sort of thing I'm looking for with the thematic group but, unless there's a big PDM heading my way, it's all a bit 'so what?'

Simond9x, in case I give away too much, I'll put some hints on the other thread...
