Numbskull, the third word in the clue has the misprint. The entry, reversed, would be 'late' as in ??? behind.... Forward, it's a synonym for the corrected word.

Thank you Malone. I had got stuck on the idea that moss was a misprint of mass. All clear now.

I've completed the grid but am struggling with "The next line suggests..." changes. This line indicates changing one SPECIFIC letter for another SPECIFIC letter, but NOT also the other way round which seems to be necessary to complete the final instruction.

If one assumes that the word "changes" in the instructions can be construed as "EXchanges", this would work, but I have TWO "exchanges" in 35dn in order to leave a real word, giving me an odd number of swapped letters...

Am I overthinking this? And are there two exchanges in 35dn?

...if the 2nd letter isn't changed you don't have a real word

I've consulted the BRB and found that "change" CAN mean "exchange". So, interpreting the instruction to mean "exchange each and every occurrence of LETTER 1 and LETTER 2 in the grid with its opposite number" gives the desired result... but not in time to catch the late post collection.

Having breezed through 80% of this, I've come a bit of a cropper towards the bottom. So, please could I get a hint for 42A? And am I right in thinking that 40D contains an extra word, not a misprint?
